Controversy Erupts Over UniAbuja VC Appointment Criteria

The appointment of Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi as Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has ignited controversy regarding compliance with the advertised requirements for the position.

The advertisement specified that candidates must possess a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree and have a minimum of 10 years of experience as a professor. Despite Fawehinmi being selected through a merit-based process involving a shortlist of 10 candidates, concerns have been raised about whether he meets the fundamental academic qualifications.

Critics argue that his medical fellowship does not equate to a PhD, referencing a judgment from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria which clarified that a postgraduate diploma conferred by a medical fellowship does not fulfill the criteria for an academic doctorate. The Federal Ministry of Education has reiterated that such fellowships remain professional qualifications rather than academic degrees.
