Faye Elected ECOWAS Chairman Amidst Regional Challenges

Bassirou Diomaye Faye was elected as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) during the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Sierra Leone. He succeeds Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, who took over from Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2025.

Faye's election occurs at a pivotal moment for ECOWAS, which is grappling with severe challenges such as insecurity, military coups, and internal divisions that threaten regional integration. At 46, Faye represents a new generation of leadership, advocating for transparency, accountability, and youth participation in governance.

However, ECOWAS faces pressing crises, including violent extremism in the Sahel, organized crime, and the erosion of constitutional governance. The organization has been criticized for its inconsistent responses to military coups, undermining its moral authority.

Faye's immediate priority will be to rebuild relations with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which have withdrawn from ECOWAS, posing a significant setback to regional integration.
