FCCPC Investigates Airlines for Price Fixing During Holidays

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is probing five domestic airlines over allegations of price fixing during the 2025 Christmas and New Year travel period. This investigation was initiated after numerous complaints from travelers who reported paying significantly higher fares during the festive season.

Tunji Bello, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of FCCPC, disclosed this information during a briefing at the Presidential Villa on Thursday. Preliminary investigations revealed that ticket prices for domestic routes surged dramatically, with fares typically ranging from ₦45,000 to ₦50,000 skyrocketing to between ₦400,000 and ₦670,000 during the peak holiday season.

The FCCPC is considering options for enforcement, including potentially ordering airlines to refund passengers who paid inflated prices. The agency is also reviewing pricing practices of foreign airlines operating in Nigeria to ensure fair charges for passengers.

Loui Odion, an executive at FCCPC, clarified that the agency does not regulate prices directly but aims to prevent exploitative practices that harm consumers.
