FCCPC Investigates Price Manipulation by Airlines

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has released an interim report uncovering alleged price manipulation by Nigerian airlines during the December 2025 festive season. The report indicates that ticket prices during this peak period were significantly higher than those recorded in January 2026, despite stable operational variables such as aviation fuel prices and government taxes.

The commission noted that fare increases coincided with reduced seat availability, suggesting possible deliberate supply constraints. Specific routes, including Abuja to Port Harcourt, experienced peak fares that were reported to be several times higher than post-peak levels.

The FCCPC, led by Director of Corporate Affairs Ondaj Ijagwu and Executive Vice Chairman/CEO Tunji Bello, is conducting a broader investigation into potential violations of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act of 2018. The commission has also extended its investigation to foreign airlines operating in Nigeria amid complaints of higher fares compared to neighboring countries.

The ongoing investigation is expected to influence future regulatory oversight in Nigeria's aviation sector.
