FCCPC Report Reveals Price Fixing by Local Airlines

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) announced findings from an interim report that indict local airlines for price fixing during the festive season. The report, released on January 25, 2026, follows an industry-wide investigation initiated earlier in January.

Mr. Ondaj Ijagwu, FCCPC's Director of Corporate Affairs, stated that the analysis indicated fares during December 2025 were materially higher than those observed post-peak in January 2026.

The report highlighted that airlines appeared to set prices arbitrarily, influenced by yield management and capacity allocation rather than regulatory fees. Mr.

Tunji Bello, FCCPC's Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive, emphasized the commission's role in ensuring competitive market outcomes while safeguarding consumer protection principles. The report also noted that certain routes, such as Abuja to Port Harcourt, saw peak fares significantly higher than post-peak levels, with median fares reaching approximately N405,000.

The FCCPC plans to conduct further analyses and may engage in regulatory guidance or enforcement actions as necessary.
