FCCPC Identifies Price Fixing by Local Airlines

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), led by Executives Stellamari Amuwa and Tunji Bello, has uncovered a case of price fixing by local airlines during the festive season. An interim report released on Thursday indicates that fares recorded in December 2025 were materially higher than those observed post-peak in January 2026.

The commission's preliminary analysis shows that airlines appeared to set prices arbitrarily, with certain routes like Abuja to Port Harcourt experiencing peak fares significantly higher than post-peak levels. The report highlights that the median fare for a single ticket reached approximately 405,000 Naira during the festive window.

The FCCPC's ongoing review aims to ensure competitive market practices and may lead to regulatory guidance or enforcement actions based on findings related to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018, which prohibits price fixing and unfair contract terms. The commission also plans to investigate foreign airlines amid complaints about fare disparities.
