FCT Council Chairmen Fail to Attend N100bn Hearing

The six Area Council Chairmen of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) did not attend a scheduled appearance before the House of Representatives’ Public Accounts Committee on September 22, 2026, to address alleged financial infractions involving approximately N100 billion. The Committee, chaired by Rep. Bamidele Salam, has now issued a seven-day final summons to the Directors of Personnel Management and Finance, as well as Heads of Audit from the councils, requiring their presence on October 14, 2026, or face sanctions.
The councils involved are Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali. An audit report revealed that these councils had outstanding liabilities of about N7.65 billion due to unremitted pension deductions, Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Value Added Tax (VAT), and unpaid obligations to contractors.
AMAC had the highest liability at N2.19 billion, followed by Bwari with N1.49 billion. The report also criticized the councils for poor management of fixed assets, particularly Gwagwalada, which had non-current assets valued at N336 million that were not properly recorded.
