INEC Chairman Reports Peaceful FCT Elections

On Saturday, the INEC Chairman, Amupitan, addressed newsmen in Abuja regarding the FCT elections, stating that the process was orderly, efficient, and peaceful. He noted that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) significantly reduced voter wait times, with accreditation taking less than five seconds.

Amupitan commended the high voter turnout, attributing it to increased public awareness about the importance of participating in the electoral process. He praised the calm atmosphere during the elections and the conduct of security personnel, who ensured order with 30 personnel present.

Amupitan also addressed concerns about incidents involving the harassment of journalists, assuring that INEC is committed to the safety of accredited personnel and intervened immediately in such cases. He acknowledged minor hiccups in certain areas, particularly delays in the arrival of electoral materials, but confirmed that 99 percent of polling units across the FCT successfully opened by 10:30 AM.

Amupitan pledged that INEC would ensure that every vote in the FCT is counted and emphasized the need for improvements ahead of the 2027 general elections.
