INEC Chairman Praises Peaceful FCT Area Council Elections

On the day of the FCT Area Council elections, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu reported that the electoral process was conducted in an orderly and peaceful manner.

He monitored voting at several polling units within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and praised the efficiency of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which significantly reduced voter wait times. Yakubu noted a positive voter turnout, attributing it to increased public awareness of the importance of participating in the electoral process.

He commended the calm atmosphere during the elections and mentioned that 30 security personnel were present to ensure order. Yakubu acknowledged minor issues, such as delays in the arrival of electoral materials at some polling units, but stated that 99 percent of polling units opened successfully by 10:30 AM.

He assured that INEC remains committed to ensuring the safety of accredited personnel and journalists, addressing any incidents of harassment promptly. Lessons learned from this election will be applied to improve the electoral process for the 2027 general elections.
