INEC Confirms FCT Polling Units Split in 2022, Not 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) clarified that the split of polling units in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was executed in February 2022, not in 2026, as previously claimed. This statement was issued by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman Josiah Amupitan.

The commission dismissed assertions regarding voter migration ahead of the 2026 elections, emphasizing that there was no such migration. INEC had successfully conducted a mock election, which revealed difficulties for voters in locating polling units.

To address these issues, INEC created 56,000 additional polling units nationwide, increasing the total to 119,972, with the aim of improving voter access and reducing congestion. The FCT saw the redistribution of approximately 580,000 voters across 1,156 polling units.

INEC urged voters to verify their polling details online before the elections to avoid inconveniences.
