Abuja Youths Prioritize Football Over Council Elections

During the area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday, a large number of young residents chose to engage in football matches rather than participate in the electoral process. This trend was observed in various neighborhoods, particularly in Gwarinpa and Gwagwalada, where young men transformed streets into makeshift pitches.

The indifference towards the elections was evident as these youths played soccer while the electoral process unfolded nearby. The situation was further complicated by a curfew announced by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, aimed at ensuring a hitch-free voting process by restricting movement and limiting vehicular traffic.

However, enforcement of this curfew appeared lax, as taxi drivers and private motorists continued to operate freely. This defiance of the curfew highlights the disconnect between the youth and the electoral process in the region.
