Concerns Raised Over FCT Elections Amid Security Issues

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, co-convened by Jane Okek, Mma Odi, and Celestin Odo, expressed serious concerns regarding the conduct of the FCT elections. They reported a security breach in Abaji, where a voter was seen wielding a cutlass, prompting security personnel to intervene.

Additionally, allegations surfaced of vote trading, with reports of individuals exchanging votes for N10,000 at various polling units. The Situation Room noted the visible presence of party agents, raising questions about their potential role in conflicts.

They also highlighted gaps in support for persons with disabilities, noting that essential voting aids were lacking at several polling centers. Despite these issues, the Situation Room praised the swift response of INEC's FCT help desk.

They called on political actors and stakeholders to maintain a peaceful atmosphere as the election process continued, urging security agencies to uphold professionalism as the polls closed and vote counting commenced.
