Female Student Abandons Newborn at Kwara Hospital

A female student abandoned her newborn at Apalara Medical Hospital in Kwara State following delivery on Thursday. The state government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs, has taken custody of the infant.

Opeyemi Oluwakemi, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, emphasized the government's commitment to protecting orphans and vulnerable children. The mother, who had initially sought to terminate her pregnancy, was persuaded to carry it to term but later abandoned the child.

Giwa Luqman, Chief Medical Director of Apalara Hospital, confirmed the incident and stated that the mother’s decision will be reconsidered under child rights laws, which provide for the reintegration of abandoned babies into society through foster care or adoption. The Ministry will ensure the baby receives necessary medical and physical care.

The Nigeria Police Force has also been involved in the case.
