Nigeria Shifts to 80% Practical Training in Agriculture

The federal government of Nigeria has enacted a significant reform in agricultural training within tertiary institutions, transitioning from a previous model of 70% theory and 30% practical training to a new structure of 80% practical and 20% theoretical learning. This announcement was made by Minister of Education Dr.

Tunji Alausa on Thursday in Abuja, during the reception of the report from the National Implementation Committee on the Review and Development of Agricultural Curricula for Tertiary Institutions. Alausa emphasized that this reform aims to provide students with real-world experience necessary for success in agriculture, ultimately contributing to national development, food security, and job creation.

Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, praised the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders in developing the new curricula, which includes 36 new and revised ND and HND curricula, 3 NCE curricula, and 31 National Occupational Standards. The ministry plans to work closely with the NBTE and other institutions to ensure effective implementation of these reforms.
