Nigeria's Government Approves Port Upgrades for Growth

The Federal Government has approved the comprehensive modernization and upgrade of Onne, Rivers, Delta, and Calabar ports, as announced by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola. This decision, communicated through a statement by Special Adviser Dr. Bolaji Akinola, complements previous approvals for Apapa and Tincan Island ports in Lagos.

Oyetola emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to reposition Nigeria’s maritime sector as a key driver of economic growth, trade, and employment. The Minister stated that modern, efficient ports are essential for facilitating trade and attracting investment.

The upgrades aim to improve cargo handling, reduce vessel turnaround times, and enhance regional connectivity. Oyetola noted that the modernization of these ports would help distribute cargo traffic more evenly across the country, thereby supporting industrial and regional development.
