Nigeria's Government Modernizes Onne, Rivers, Delta, Calabar Ports

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a comprehensive modernization and upgrade of Onne, Rivers, Delta, and Calabar ports to expand the country's maritime infrastructure beyond Lagos. Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced this on X, stating that the approval is part of a broader strategy to modernize existing ports and develop new deep seaports, including Ibom, Bakassi, Agge, Gateway, Ondo, and Bonny.

The initiative aims to create a balanced and efficient port system, reduce cargo traffic concentration in Lagos, and improve cargo handling and operational efficiency. Oyetola emphasized that modern ports are essential for facilitating trade, supporting industries, attracting investments, and creating jobs.

The upgrades are expected to strengthen regional connectivity and make goods movement more predictable and cost-effective. The overall vision is to establish an integrated maritime and logistics system that enhances Nigeria's position as a major maritime hub in Africa.
