FG Launches Training for 5,000 Smart Meter Installers

On Thursday, the Federal Government launched the training of the first batch of 5,000 smart electricity meter installers under the Power Force programme at the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria in Abuja. The initiative, part of the Presidential Metering Initiative, received nearly 220,000 applications.

The selected cohort will undergo a three-week intensive training before being deployed as certified meter installers. Olu Verheijen, Executive Secretary of the Presidential Metering Initiative and Special Adviser to the President on Oil and Gas, stated that the initiative aims to create a competent workforce for Nigeria's electricity sector.

Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, emphasized the importance of human capital in electricity reforms. He also acknowledged the Association of Meter Manufacturers of Nigeria for withdrawing a court action against the meter deployment programme.

The Presidential Metering Initiative, established by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, seeks to address structural barriers in the electricity sector and ensure fair billing for electricity usage.
