Nigeria Enhances Water Management for Livestock Growth

The Federal Government of Nigeria is committed to improving water resource management and expanding irrigated fodder production to transform the livestock sector. During a technical engagement in Abuja, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, highlighted Nigeria's potential for all-season fodder production, which could enhance livestock productivity and create employment.

He stated that the challenge lies not in water availability but in its efficient management. Investments in modern irrigation infrastructure and innovative technologies are essential for year-round pasture production.

The Minister noted that expanding irrigated fodder production would help minimize farmer-herder conflicts and create economic opportunities. Dr.

Adebayo Oke from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) discussed ongoing technical support for water resource management and irrigation development in Nigeria. The IWMI identified three priority areas for collaboration, including assessing water resources for fodder production and implementing pilot projects.
