Nigeria and Uganda Collaborate to Enhance Livestock Sector

On Wednesday, 26th August 2026, Hon. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the Minister of Livestock Development, met with Chief Michael Awunor, President of the Nigeria-Uganda Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, in Abuja. The meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration between Nigeria and Uganda in livestock development.

Key areas of focus include improved animal genetics, fodder production, crossbreeding, household ranching, technology transfer, livestock trade, and knowledge exchange. Chief Awunor noted that Nigerian livestock stakeholders are already sourcing cattle genetics and fodder from Uganda and emphasized the need for a structured framework to facilitate these exchanges.

He also highlighted Uganda's household ranching model, which could offer valuable lessons for Nigeria. Minister Maiha expressed interest in adapting successful livestock production systems from Uganda to Nigeria's context, acknowledging that many Nigerian households keep livestock but often lack access to improved breeds and modern management practices.
