Tinubu Urges AU to Address South Africa Attacks

On Sunday, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, addressed the African Union during the 21st Extraordinary Session in Luanda, Angola, regarding the ongoing xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans and other nationals in South Africa. Tinubu expressed Nigeria's concern, stating that such attacks undermine African solidarity, unity, and peaceful coexistence.

He formally requested that the matter be included on the agenda for the upcoming 40th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly scheduled for January 2027. Tinubu called for enhanced continental efforts to combat xenophobia and Afrophobia, advocating for dialogue, preventive diplomacy, and collective action.

He also discussed the broader security situation in Africa, supporting the adoption of the Luanda Action Plan for conflict prevention. Tinubu warned against the reliance on external military forces, which could weaken African institutions and ownership, and urged arms-producing countries to cooperate with African states to prevent weapons diversion to non-state armed groups.
