FG Enrolls 136 Million Nigerians in National Database

The Federal Government of Nigeria has successfully enrolled 136 million Nigerians into a national identity database following the enactment of the new National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act. Engr.

Abisoye Coker Odusote, the Director General of NIMC, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning in Abuja on Tuesday. The new act, which repeals and replaces the 2007 legislation, aims to update the framework for modernizing Nigeria's digital identity ecosystem.

It establishes a foundation for the National Identification Number (NIN) as a key component of identity policy and introduces robust data protection and cybersecurity measures. The Director General reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to enrolling all legal residents in Nigeria within the shortest possible time and expressed readiness to collaborate with the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning to leverage the NIN for national development initiatives.

Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu emphasized the importance of effective implementation of the act to deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
