FG to Establish 41 UniPods for Knowledge-Based Economy

The Federal Government of Nigeria is launching 41 university innovation pods, known as UniPods, across various tertiary institutions to facilitate research, technology, and innovation aimed at transitioning from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy. Dr. Olatunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, announced this initiative during a meeting with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and seven vice-chancellors.

This effort aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's vision of leveraging education and innovation to create jobs and build a $1 trillion economy. Currently, eight UniPods have been commissioned or are ready for commissioning, with three operational at the University of Lagos, Nasarawa State University, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

The initiative includes specialized centers such as the Blue Economy UniPod in Akwa Ibom and the AgroTech UniPod at Benue State University. Alausa emphasized the need for these centers to generate economic value and not solely rely on grants, aiming for financial sustainability and private investment in the future.
