FG to Launch 41 University Innovation Hubs in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to establish 41 university innovation hubs across tertiary institutions to transition the country from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-driven economy. This initiative was disclosed by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, in a statement following a meeting with the United Nations Development Programme and seven university vice-chancellors.

The innovation hubs, referred to as UniPods, are intended to move research and innovation beyond academic publications, focusing on translating discoveries into commercial enterprises, job creation, and measurable economic impact. Dr Alausa noted that eight UniPods have been inaugurated or are ready for inauguration, with three already operational at the University of Lagos, Nasarawa State University, and Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.

He highlighted specialized hubs such as the Blue Economy UniPod in Akwa Ibom State and AgroTech at Benue State University. The minister emphasized that the success of this initiative will be measured by the practical solutions and business opportunities generated, urging a shift in tertiary institutions towards commercializing lab discoveries.
