Nigeria Targets 8,000MW Power Generation by 2027

The Federal Government of Nigeria has set a target of 8,000 megawatts of electricity generation and transmission by the end of 2027, as part of its efforts to enhance power supply across the country. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe announced this goal on Wednesday during the launch of the Renewable Energy Assets Management Company (RAMCO) in Abuja by the Rural Electrification Agency.

Tegbe indicated that the government aims for 6,500 megawatts by the end of 2026, while currently struggling to wheel approximately 5,000 megawatts. He expressed optimism that Nigerians would soon experience round-the-clock electricity, citing recent improvements in the sector.

Tegbe acknowledged Nigeria's paradox of having rich energy resources yet struggling with electricity supply. He emphasized that RAMCO would introduce a new management approach for renewable energy infrastructure and that the government is working on a versatile electricity system that includes mini-grids for areas lacking transmission infrastructure.

The broader objective is to ensure that electricity infrastructure contributes to economic growth.
