FG Targets 6,000MW Electricity Generation by December

The Federal Government of Nigeria has set a target to generate and wheel 6,000 megawatts of electricity by December, as announced by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, during the commissioning of two new 100 megavolt-ampere, 132/33 kilovolt power transformers at the Ijora Transmission Substation in Lagos. Currently, power generation is around 5,000 megawatts, while the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has an 8,500 megawatts wheeling capacity.

Tegbe emphasized that the goal is not just to increase generation but also to ensure reliable transmission of electricity to consumers. The government plans to commission 20 transmission projects by year-end to strengthen the electricity infrastructure.

The upgrade at the Ijora substation increases its capacity from 90 MVA to 230 MVA, providing an additional 125 megawatts of bulk transmission capacity. This enhancement will improve electricity supply to various communities and support economic activities in the region, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for Nigeria’s economic transformation.
