FG Aims for 80% Electricity Access in Five Years

The Federal Government of Nigeria has committed to raising electricity access above 80% within five years and closing the gap between installed and available power generation within three years. This announcement was made by Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe during a presentation at the Nigeria Economic Summit Group event in Lagos.

Tegbe also pledged to align with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission's target of reducing Aggregate Technical, Commercial, and Collection losses to below 16.92% within three years. The government's plan includes strengthening key transmission corridors such as Lagos, Enugu-Port Harcourt, and Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, expanding electricity access, and improving reliability for businesses and households.

The initiative supports President Bola Tinubu's goal of transforming Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy, with electricity being central to this ambition. The ministry highlighted that Nigeria has 13,625 megawatts of installed grid capacity but only 4,854MW of average daily availability, indicating a significant electricity deficit impacting industrialization.
