Nigeria Secures Global Approval for Root Tuber Flour Standards

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Nigerian government commended the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) for securing global approval for new standards for root and tuber flour, including sweet potato and yam. This achievement was recognized during the 49th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49) in Geneva.

Dr. Jumoke Oduwol, a representative of the Nigerian government, described this milestone as a landmark success that reflects Nigeria's expanding leadership in developing international food standards.

The approval is expected to enhance food safety, boost agricultural exports, and unlock new opportunities in the global gluten-free food market. Dr.

Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okek, Director General and Chief Executive of SON, emphasized that this achievement underscores Nigeria's leadership in global food standards and will facilitate fair practices in international food trade. The new standards aim to protect consumer health and improve regulatory systems, thereby reducing post-harvest losses and expanding market access for Nigerian agricultural products.
