SON Secures New Standards for Root and Tuber Flour

The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) has been commended by the Federal Government and stakeholders in the food industry for securing new standards for root and tuber flour, including yam and sweet potato. This achievement was reported during the 49th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49), where SON represented Nigeria and secured approval for a new work proposal to develop group standards for these flours.

Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, the Director General of SON, was congratulated for this landmark success by Dr.

Jumoke Oduwol, the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment. Oduwol noted that this achievement reflects Nigeria's expanding leadership in developing international food standards, which supports the federal government's economic diversification agenda.

The new standards are expected to improve product quality, expand market access, and increase the competitiveness of Nigerian agricultural products. Additionally, the Codex Alimentarius Commission's proposal for international standards aims to strengthen consumer health protection and facilitate fair practices in international food trade.
