Nigeria's Maritime Justice System Key to Economic Growth

The Federal Government of Nigeria underscored the vital role of an effective maritime justice system in realizing the full economic potential of the maritime sector. Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, made this statement on Wednesday in Abuja at the 18th International Maritime Seminar for Judges, organized by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC).

He asserted that investor confidence hinges on the courts' ability to resolve commercial disputes fairly and swiftly. Akume emphasized that Nigeria’s maritime domain should be seen as a catalyst for employment, investment, and economic diversification.

He stated that no investor would commit capital without assurance of prompt and transparent dispute resolution. Additionally, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr.

Adegboyega Oyetola, noted that the seminar's theme, “Advancing Maritime Justice, Strengthening Global Trade,” reflects the essential connection between a robust legal system and a thriving maritime economy. Oyetola highlighted that infrastructural development and policy reforms must be supported by a trustworthy legal framework to achieve Nigeria's maritime aspirations.
