FG Commits to Maritime Seminar Resolutions for Policy Reform

On Wednesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, pledged to ensure that resolutions from the 18th International Maritime Seminar for Judges are translated into policy, legislation, and institutional reforms. This seminar was organized by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute and the Nigerian Maritime Law Association.

Senator Akume emphasized that maritime justice is a national governance issue impacting trade, investment, and living costs for Nigerians. He noted the detrimental effects of delayed maritime claims and unresolved cargo disputes on trade and investor confidence.

Akume stated that the Office of the SGF would coordinate efforts for data sharing and regulatory alignment, engaging the National Assembly and the Federal Ministry of Justice where legislative reviews are necessary. He acknowledged the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, for her role in the seminar and expressed hope for improved regional judicial cooperation.

The seminar aligns with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritizing the Blue Economy for economic diversification.
