FG Launches Fertility Centre at University of Maiduguri

On Tuesday, the Federal Government inaugurated a fertility centre and en-suite complex at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), aimed at improving access to specialized reproductive healthcare in the North-East. Uba Maigari Ahmadu, the Minister of State for Regional Development, stated that the facilities, delivered by the North-East Development Commission (NEDC), would reduce the need for couples to travel to major cities for fertility treatment.

This initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to enhance healthcare access. Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum praised NEDC for its contributions to UMTH, emphasizing the hospital's role in providing essential services despite challenges.

NEDC Managing Director Mohammed Goni Alkali highlighted the advanced equipment installed, including an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) machine and solar power for uninterrupted service. The new facilities are expected to lower costs and distance for couples seeking assisted reproductive services.
