Nigeria Launches Platform for Family Planning and Health

On August 7, 2026, the Federal Government of Nigeria inaugurated a High-Level Inter-Ministerial Platform on Family Planning, Health, Human Capital, and National Development in Abuja. The initiative aims to strengthen government coordination and utilize Nigeria's youthful population as a catalyst for sustainable national development.

Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, emphasized that Nigeria's population, estimated at 230 million, could either be an asset or a liability based on investments in health, education, and productivity. The Platform aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's vision for a prosperous Nigeria.

It will adopt a life-course approach, involving various ministries, including Health and Social Welfare, Budget and Economic Planning, and Finance, each with specific roles in enhancing health systems, resource allocation, and creating a conducive fiscal environment. The National Population Commission is identified as a key partner in population planning and demographic projections.
