Nigeria Links Family Planning to National Development Goals

The Nigerian Government has linked family planning and maternal and child health to national development, stating that the country's rapidly growing population must be transformed into a productive asset. Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, made this statement during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Platform on Family Planning, Health, Human Capital and National Development in Abuja.

He noted that Nigeria's population, currently estimated at 230 million, could reach between 450 million and 500 million by 2050, presenting opportunities if supported by investments in healthcare and education. The platform aims to enhance collaboration among ministries to improve reproductive and maternal health services.

Senator Abubakar Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, described family planning as a strategic investment in human capital. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs, emphasized policies to improve healthcare access for women and children.

Ayodele Olawande, the Minister of Youth Development, stressed the importance of youth health for sustainable development. Dr Alain Damiba from FP2030 called family planning a national development priority.
