Nigeria's NEMSA Board Inaugurated with Zero Tolerance Policy

On October 25, 2023, the Federal Government of Nigeria inaugurated the board of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) in Abuja, with a commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for substandard materials in the power sector. Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu emphasized that persistent electrical accidents and equipment failures are linked to weak compliance with technical safety standards.

He highlighted NEMSA's critical role in enforcing these standards across the entire value chain of the electricity supply industry. Adelabu urged the new board, chaired by Ikechi Nwosu, to adopt a proactive enforcement posture to ensure that all components of the power infrastructure meet the highest safety and quality standards.

He noted that the proliferation of poor-quality electrical materials significantly contributes to system losses and accidents. The board members, including Zubair Idri, Charl Asogwa, and Sani Shehu, were tasked with strengthening governance within NEMSA and enhancing compliance monitoring, while also adapting to the evolving electricity sector landscape.
