Nigerian Government Issues Deadlines to Chinese Contractors Over Substandard Road Work

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued stern warnings and deadlines to Chinese road contractors, China Harbour Engineering Company, and its affiliate, China Harbour Operation and Maintenance Company, for substandard work, slow mobilization, and environmental hazards on federal road projects. The warnings came after a high-level meeting chaired by Senator David Umahi, where top officials from the Ministry of Works and representatives of the Chinese firms were present.

The affected projects include the Makurdi-9th Mile-Enugu road and the 7th Axial road in Lagos. The Ministry received formal complaints about excess dust generation during construction activities, posing environmental and public health risks.

Umahi directed the contractors to deploy soil stabilization and dust control measures within seven days, failing which could lead to project suspensions. The government emphasized the need to safeguard public health, ensure quality project delivery, and protect government investments in the road infrastructure sector.
