Nigerian Government Summons China Harbour Over Road Project Safety Concerns

The Federal Government of Nigeria has called China Harbour Engineering Company to address public health safety issues in ongoing road projects. The Minister of Works, David Umahi, met with the company and its sister firm, China Harbour Operation & Maintenance Company, following complaints about the Mararaba-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia-Makurdi road project. The government announced a six-week partial closure of parts of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for urgent repairs and expansion of joints at various bridges. Umahi directed the Permanent Secretary to mandate immediate dust control measures, including soil stabilization techniques, to mitigate health risks to residents. The Ministry also warned of project suspensions if issues are not resolved promptly.

In response, China Harbour committed to implementing industry-standard anti-dust measures and full mobilization of equipment to expedite work. The closure of a section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was deemed necessary to resume critical rehabilitation work, addressing public complaints of prolonged traffic congestion. The Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Michael Komolaf, apologized for inconveniences caused to motorists and assured improved traffic management. The CBC Construction Company was tasked with completing the necessary repairs promptly.
