Nigeria Moves to Decriminalise Attempted Suicide

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated steps to decriminalise attempted suicide, following the approval of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare's position by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). This announcement was made by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, during the commemoration of the 2026 World Suicide Prevention Day in Abuja, where he was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Daju Kachollom S.

The proposed decriminalisation will now proceed to the National Assembly for legislative action. Salako emphasized that this reform is not only a legal necessity but also a public health and human rights imperative, advocating for care and support for individuals experiencing mental health crises instead of punishment.

He noted that removing the fear of criminal sanctions could reduce stigma and promote timely intervention. Additionally, Salako called for enhanced investment in mental health services and community support to effectively address suicide prevention.
