NMA Awards Governor Otu for Healthcare Reforms

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Cross River State Branch, awarded Governor Bassey Otu the Platinum Meritorious Service Award for his administration's achievements in healthcare. This award, the highest honor from the NMA, was unanimously approved during the association’s Annual General Meeting.

Dr. Ezoke Epoke, a former NMA chairman, presented the award, highlighting the increase in health sector budgetary allocation to over 10 percent under Otu's leadership, compared to the previous 5-6 percent. The governor's administration also revised doctors’ remuneration by 100 percent, lifted recruitment embargo, and approved the hiring of 40 doctors, including 10 specialists.

The extension of the retirement age for healthcare workers from 60 to 65 years was noted as a measure to retain experienced personnel. The NMA recognized three significant laws signed by Otu—the Hospital Management Board Law, Medical Quackery Prohibition Law, and Drug Management Agency Law—as transformative for the sector.

Additionally, the administration's efforts in improving security for medical practitioners were acknowledged.
