Nigeria's BPP Launches Training for MSMEs in Procurement
The Federal Government of Nigeria is committed to enhancing the participation of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in public procurement by launching a free digital training platform. This initiative was unveiled by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) on Tuesday, with support from the World Bank.
Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of State for Industry, emphasized the need for a shift towards a system that accommodates small businesses, highlighting that complicated procedures and documentation requirements have historically excluded capable entrepreneurs. He noted that simply creating digital platforms is insufficient if businesses cannot effectively use them.
The BPP's Director-General, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, stated that the training program aims to fill capacity gaps that hinder MSMEs from accessing government contracts. The platform will offer practical training on various aspects of procurement and will be accessible via smartphones, tablets, and computers.
However, Adedokun clarified that completing the training does not guarantee eligibility for contracts, which will still follow competitive procedures.
