FG Launches Programme to Boost University Funding

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled the National Universities Advancement Programme (NUAP) aimed at reducing universities' dependence on public funding. The initiative, announced by Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, is designed to complement existing government funding by helping universities develop alternative revenue sources.

The program focuses on strengthening alumni engagement, fundraising strategies, and partnerships to build financial sustainability and enhance global competitiveness among Nigerian universities. The initiative was formalized through a memorandum signed on Thursday, with a commitment from President Bola Tinubu's administration to support higher education.

The program will involve collaboration with the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation (NHEF) and other stakeholders to improve research capacity and student access to scholarships. Alausa emphasized that the NUAP is not intended to replace government support but to create additional pathways for institutional growth and innovation.

The program aims to leverage Nigeria's vast alumni network to unlock research funding and mentorship opportunities.
