Nigeria Inaugurates Committee to Tackle Gas Supply Issues

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated steps to resolve persistent gas shortages that undermine electricity generation across the country by inaugurating a gas power monitoring committee. The committee was announced by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who described this move as a strategic decision aimed at addressing critical constraints in the Nigerian electricity supply industry.

Adelabu noted that gas-fired plants account for 80% of Nigeria's electricity generation, which continues to face setbacks due to supply disruptions, pipeline vandalism, and debts owed to gas producers. The committee is tasked with monitoring and driving resolutions to these issues, including repairing damaged pipelines and ensuring timely payments to gas suppliers.

Adelabu expressed confidence in the committee's ability to deliver results and emphasized that it comprises representatives from various stakeholders in the gas power value chain. The committee is expected to provide regular reports and hold itself accountable for progress in addressing these critical issues.
