Nigeria's AI-Powered Policing and Fiber Network Initiative

The Federal Government of Nigeria unveiled plans to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) in policing and expand fiber optic connectivity to police stations across the country. This initiative follows a memorandum of understanding signed by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, represented by Dr.

Bosun Tijani. The project aims to map police stations nationwide to identify gaps in fiber infrastructure and enhance police outcomes through data-driven tools.

The government has committed to laying 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable nationwide, with an expected presence in 7,000 wards. The initiative also includes developing a national data exchange system to facilitate seamless information sharing among agencies.

Moham Sheidu, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, emphasized the importance of modern resources for police efficiency and public trust. The project is expected to establish AI-enabled tools for incident reporting and data management, with a rollout anticipated by May 2025.
