Federal Government Launches CNG Bus Initiative for Campuses

On October 13, the Federal Government pledged to deploy Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses and tricycles within and around university campuses across Nigeria to address rising transportation costs for students and staff. Ismaeel Ahmed, the Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles, announced this during a CNG awareness campaign at Bayero University Kano.
The initiative, known as Project SPROUT, is implemented in partnership with FEMADEC Energy and the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund. It aims to provide affordable and cleaner transportation solutions, including the construction of CNG refuelling stations and vehicle conversion centres.
Louisa Afu, representing Ahmed, emphasized the importance of public acceptance for the success of the clean-energy transition. Free CNG bus rides were offered to BUK students to familiarize them with the technology.
Engr. Ovoke Obire from FEMADEC Energy stated that subsidized CNG conversion kits would also be available for university staff.
