Government reallocates ₦100bn for CNG buses to conversions

The Federal Government has redirected its ₦100bn allocation, originally intended for the purchase of 3,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, to support vehicle conversions, tricycles, and higher-capacity buses. Tosin Coker, Chief Operating Officer of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles Initiative, disclosed this during an interview on October 12, 2026.
The decision followed a review of the initial plan established in October 2023, which concluded that merely purchasing 3,000 buses would not sufficiently address the country's transportation needs. Coker stated that the revised program aims to enhance access to alternative-fuel transportation, with over 25,000 vehicles converted in the initial phase.
He reported that more than 650 buses have been introduced nationwide, and the vehicle conversion program has achieved over 120,000 conversions. The initiative also includes procuring conversion kits and buses to improve public transportation and reduce commuting costs, although the current number of CNG buses and tricycles remains inadequate.
