FG Enhances Support for Lagos Flood Management and Water Infrastructure

The Federal Government of Nigeria has committed to providing stronger support to Lagos State in tackling persistent flooding and enhancing water infrastructure. This pledge was made by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof.

Joseph Utsev, during a courtesy visit to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at Lagos House, Marina. The minister expressed the Federal Government's sympathies regarding recent flooding incidents and outlined plans for collaboration on climate resilience, urban water sector reforms, and sanitation improvements.

He noted that the Annual Flood Outlook 2026 identified Lagos as one of 33 states at high risk of flooding, necessitating proactive planning and intergovernmental cooperation. Utsev acknowledged the worsening flooding situation due to the state's coastal geography, rapid urbanization, and climate change.

He commended the state for its flood risk reduction measures and expressed readiness to work on integrated water resources management and improved drainage infrastructure. Additionally, he welcomed Lagos State's interest in the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene programme.
