FG and Lagos State Enhance Flood Resilience Partnership

The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate on flood resilience, sustainable water resources management, urban water sector reforms, and sanitation. This was announced by the Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, during a courtesy visit to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday.

Prof. Utsev expressed gratitude for the Governor's warm reception and conveyed sympathies regarding recent flooding incidents in Lagos. He emphasized the importance of collaboration to tackle water resources and sanitation challenges in Lagos, identified as one of Africa’s fastest-growing megacities.

The Minister outlined three key areas for collaboration: enhancing flood resilience, achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status, and advancing urban water sector reforms. He noted that Lagos is at high risk of flooding, as indicated by the Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) 2026.

Prof. Utsev commended the State's existing flood mitigation measures and expressed the Federal Government's readiness to support Lagos in strengthening flood resilience and improving sanitation services.
