Vandals Steal 1,800 Manhole Covers on Lagos-Calabar Highway

The Federal Government has raised concerns regarding the vandalism of critical infrastructure along the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, revealing that approximately 1,800 manhole covers, 1,000 meters of perimeter fencing, and 75 road signs have been stolen since January 2026. Engineer Dare Olufemi, representing the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, disclosed this information during a press briefing in Lagos alongside the Lagos State Police Command.

The vandalism threatens the safety and sustainability of the multi-billion-naira project, as vandals are reportedly destroying concrete structures to extract steel reinforcements for sale. The Federal Ministry of Works described the situation as a major setback for infrastructure development, warning that such acts could increase project costs and endanger road users.

The ministry commended the efforts of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, and pledged to enhance collaboration with security agencies to combat these crimes. Residents and road users are urged to report any suspicious activities.
