Nigeria Prepares for 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu officiated a farewell ceremony for Team Nigeria at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as the country prepares for its participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes, encouraging them to compete with courage, discipline, and resilience.

Team Nigeria, consisting of 74 athletes, will depart for a three-week training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, before the Games, which will take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026. The team aims to surpass its performance from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where Nigeria finished as Africa's highest-ranked team with 35 medals (12 gold, 9 silver, and 14 bronze).

The National Sports Commission's Director General, Philip Shaibu, expressed confidence in the team's preparation and potential to win at least 20 gold medals. The chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, emphasized the importance of discipline among athletes, warning that any misconduct would lead to expulsion from the team.
