FG Reopens Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on March 31, 2026

The Federal Government has officially announced the reopening of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway to motorists, effective March 31, 2026. This decision was communicated by the Minister of Works, Engr.

David Umahi, during an inspection of ongoing reconstruction work on the expressway. The road, which spans 107 kilometers, is undergoing significant structural changes, including the conversion of a substantial portion from asphalt to concrete to enhance durability and safety.

Umahi expressed confidence that this intervention by the Tinubu administration would significantly change the trajectory of the route, which has been plagued by fatal accidents and traffic congestion, particularly affecting the public during festive periods like Easter. He emphasized the importance of the road for the South East geo-political zone and assured that the reconstruction efforts would prevent the frequent tanker explosions and economic disruptions that have historically occurred on this highway.

The minister also mentioned plans for a comprehensive assessment of the road's condition across six geo-political zones by May 29.
