FG Reduces Ministers' Imprest Limit to N700,000

The Federal Government of Nigeria has implemented a new directive to reduce the imprest limit for ministers to N700,000, effective from June 3, 2026. This measure is part of an effort to strengthen financial discipline across ministries, departments, and agencies.

The circular, signed by the Accountant General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, outlines the new reimbursement limits: Permanent Secretaries and Directors General will have a limit of N500,000, while Directors heading departments will be entitled to N300,000, and heads of format state authorized imprest holders will be capped at N100,000. The frequency of imprest reimbursement is restricted to once per quarter, with a maximum of two reimbursements allowed per quarter if necessary.

The directive also emphasizes compliance with financial regulations and mandates that all ministries and agencies submit detailed reports on their imprest allocations within 30 days. This initiative follows concerns raised in audit reports regarding the management and oversight of public funds.
